Samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets are high-tech second-generation rare-earth permanent magnets that hold a special place in modern industry. Developed in the 1960s, these magnets represented a breakthrough in magnetic materials, offering a unique combination of high magnetic energy and exceptional thermal stability.

Unlike the more common neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets, samarium-cobalt products retain their magnetic properties in extreme operating conditions—at temperatures ranging from -270°C to +350°C, in vacuum environments, under high radiation levels, and in aggressive chemical environments.

Key advantages:

  • Operating temperature up to +350°C
  • No protective coatings required
  • Property stability >50 years
  • Resistance to corrosion and oxidation
  • Operation in vacuum and radiation fields

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions and answers

Can SmCo be used instead of neodymium magnets? Yes, if the operating temperature is >150°C, corrosion resistance without coating is required, or long-term stability is critical.

Do SmCo magnets need to be coated? In most cases, no. SmCo has natural corrosion resistance. Coating is only required for extremely aggressive environments or biomedical applications.

How long do SmCo magnets last? When stored properly, SmCo magnets retain >99% of their properties for over 50 years. Losses amount to <1% over 10 years.

Can SmCo magnets be cut? Yes, using specialized methods: electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond grinding with cooling, and laser cutting. They cannot be sawed or drilled with conventional tools.
